Issue #2: The price on the page should be the price you pay

Subject line: The price on the page should be the price you pay By: Mason Bennett, boat dealership GM

Two things crossed my desk this week with the same lesson. The first price somebody sees should be the price they actually pay. That goes for the boats we advertise and for the software we buy.

1. The FTC on advertised boat prices

On Oct. 19, MRAA's Mike Sayre wrote up the FTC's new FAQ on how dealers advertise prices. The FAQ came out of warning letters to car dealers, but MRAA says the rules apply to marine dealers too. The short version:

MRAA's point is that none of this is new law. What's new is enforcement. The FTC announced a settlement with an auto dealer group over these issues on Oct. 8.

What I'd do this week: pull up your website, your listing-site ads and the canned texts your team and any AI tool send out. If any of them quotes a price without the doc fee and your other required fees, fix the template, not just the one listing.

2. Lightspeed's $450 to $3,000+ is not the whole bill

New on the site: Lightspeed DMS pricing 2026.

Lightspeed gets credit for publishing a range at all. Most DMS vendors don't. But Lightspeed's own documentation says connecting outside tools through its 3PA program carries "a one-time setup fee and a monthly charge for each data set per store." It doesn't say how much.

The reported numbers I could find are a 2017 forum post ($2,000 setup and $175 a month per location) and a third-party API rating site that cites $190 to $300 a month. Neither is verified, and the page labels them that way.

If your website, CRM or texting runs on an outside vendor, get the 3PA number before you sign. The page has the seven questions I'd ask on the quote.

3. This week's pricing check

I re-checked nine vendors against their own pricing pages. No price changes:

4. Worth knowing

One question for you

Does your DMS bill include integration fees you didn't see coming? Hit reply and tell me what you pay and for which tool. I'll share the anonymous results in a future issue.

Mason
